Project Name |
Pee Dee River Bridge Monitoring
System |
| |
|
Background
Information:
|
- Owner: South Carolina Department of Transportation
(SC DOT)
- Location: On the Godfrey's Ferry Bridge near Conway,
South Carolina
- Contract Value: $267,000
|
| |
|
Description
|
- Provide and install a Bridge
Monitoring System on this structure that spans the Great
Pee Dee River.
- System included (40) LifeSpan Dual
Channel PeakStrain(tm) sensors and multiple temperature
sensors.
- Installation of conduit and cabling
for this installation for the long term protection of
the cabling.
- Installation of necessary Controller
Cabinets that houses the electronics for the system.
- Installation of Battery Cabinets,
Solar Arrays and all interconnect wiring to power the
controller since 120V power was not available on the
bridge structure.
- Installation of required electronics
to allow the controller to communicate via cellular
phone to upload information to the internet for
immediate access to SC DOT personnel.
- All commissioning, testing and
checkout of the system as well as performance testing
for SC DOT.
|
| |
|
Challenges:
|
- All work had to be performed
from a Hydra-Lift (platform lift) and snooper truck to
allow access underneath the bridge structure.
- All cabinets had to be mounted
with quick dry epoxy anchors inserted into the concrete
piers for structural support.
- Precise layout had to occur
due the critical placement of each sensor so that
precise monitoring standards could be met.
- Inclement weather plays a role
in any outdoor installation such as this.
- Very tight frame was required
for the installation to accommodate the Owner and their
need of system operation as soon as possible. We
met the time frame required and the Owner was able to
begin receiving monitoring information almost
immediately.
- Cellular antennae placement
was critical due to the "less than perfect" reception in
the area.

|
Summary:
|
This was a successful job for White
Electrical and our partner, LifeSpan Technologies as we
completed the job on time and on budget which allowed the
Owner to begin monitoring their structure immediately after
system placement so that they could see live activity of the
bridge structure. |
